What do I need to do when someone passes away?

The final days and moments of someone's life are such an incredibly difficult time but can also be such a beautiful time to come together as a family. The most important thing we can do is simple: just be to be there with them and with the people you love. Embrace each other, love each other, and don't let your normal world get in the way of those precious moments together. Nothing is wrong during this time and there is certainly no need to rush.

Some families like to feel prepared and take comfort in planning ahead. This could look like a simple phone call to us to ask a question, to meet with one of us, or to put some thoughts on a paper. Whatever feels right for you and your family is perfect.

When someone passes away there are some necessary steps to take:

  1. A medical practitioner needs to attend: this can be your usual GP, an attending doctor (if at a hospital), RN (if at an aged care facility), or a paramedic if they were to pass away in the comfort of their home.
  2. Contact Pettigrew: We are on stand-by 24 hours a day, every day of the year. During this call we will ask you a few quick questions and then we will organise to bring your loved one safely into our care.
  3. We will check in with you: To organise a time when you and your family are ready to meet with one of our caring funeral directors. This will be to start the process of organising the service and celebration of life that is fitting for your loved one and you.
