Blog: Mother's Day

“It's Almost Mother's Day, Don't Forget Mum!” was the subject heading of today’s marketing email that appeared in my Inbox. Tears welled, and a sob rose from deep within – even after all these years the pain of losing my mum still held the ability to overwhelm me with heart-wrenching grief.

“Why would you think that I’d forget my mum” I vented at the silent screen of my laptop. There’s not a day that I don’t think of her! There’s not a day when I wish that I could see her smile and hear the sweet sound of her laughter. Seventeen Mother’s Days have come and gone, and I still long to hear her voice and be in her company. I still miss her after all these years.

I know it was just a simple email sent to the masses by a company who, I’m sure, meant no harm but still, it reminds me that my mum is missing from my world. And sadly, I am not the only one this Mother’s Day who will be missing their mum.

My heart goes out to the many families who will be facing their first Mother’s Day without their mum. Some are just children, others barely in their teens. Some who have had the privilege of seeing their mum grow old. Regardless of how old we grow we never want to say goodbye to the mum who we love, and who loved us.

“If I know what love is, it is because of you." ― Hermann Hesse

So, to those who grieve for their mum this Mother’s Day my wish for you is this – May beautiful memories of your mum bring you comfort and joy and may your Mother’s Day be as lovely as it can be.
